Wallace Bridge (Director)

Dr Wallace Bridge (B.Sc, M.App.Sc, PhD) has 20 years academic and industrial experience in biotechnology based R&D in Australia and Europe (UK and Italy). His major research interest areas have included; ethanol; cephalosporin C, nisin, thiol antioxidants; isoprenoids; fungal and bacterial glycosidic enzymes; lactic acid bacteria (dairy starter cultures and probiotics), bakers yeast; yeast extract manufacture; microbial biotransformations; biocatalysis and more recently immunology. Throughout 1995-2001, he was a Program Leader and Commercial Project Manager for the CRC for Food Industry Innovation and was responsible for the management of collaborative and contract R&D with a range of companies and organisations that operate in the Australian and international food, nutraceutical and biopharmaceutical markets. As the current Director of the Entrepreneurs in Science Unit of the Faculty of Science, UNSW, he has established undergraduate and postgraduate programs in innovation and research management for science and engineering trained students. He maintains research activities in the areas of biocatalysis and immunology. Technology for the manufacture of a novel antioxidant developed in his UNSW research group is currently being commercialised by Biospecialties Australia Pty. Ltd.

Timothy Ellis (B.Sc Biotechnology (Hons I), Dip.Innov.Man, UNSW)) is part of Deloitte’s Research and Development (R&D) Tax and Incentives Group, which helps technology companies across all industry groups within Australia access Federal Government R&D Tax Incentives. Timothy spent 2.5 years, prior to Deloitte, as Assistant Director of the EIS Unit assisting with the development and teaching of the Diploma and Graduate Certificate Programs and was heavily involved in its movement to the Australian School of Business (ASB) and its offering across UNSW.

Timothy completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biotechnology, and achieved First Class Honours. His honours project centred on the relationship of prostate cancer and cholesterol and involved the investigation of targeted chemotherapeutic strategies to reduce prostate cancer cell viability. In his honours year he was also part of the winning business planning team in the 2007 Peter Farrell Challenge Cup.

Being a Diploma in Innovation Management graduate and helping develop the program as Assistant Director, he continues to support the EIS Unit and believes that innovation management training is crucial part of technology education and pivotal in developing Australia as a global player in innovation.

Timothy is currently undertaking a Master of Professional Accounting at the Australian ASB at UNSW.

 

Laurence Osen (B.Sc (Hons), B.A, Dip.Innov.Man, UNSW, MBA (Executive), AGSM) is a member of Ernst & Young’s Research and Development (R&D) team which provides specialist R&D services to innovative and technology based companies across Australia. During his role at Ernst & Young Laurence has provided specialist R&D services to companies from diverse range of industries, including metal smelting, water recycling, financial services, renewable energy projects, merchant processing, clinical diagnostics, and pathology services.

Laurence has industry experience in the fields of clinical diagnostics and pathology services at Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology and Sonic Clinical Institute where he was responsible for the establishment and implementation of new clinical services and workflow protocols. Prior to joining Ernst & Young, Laurence spent 3 years as Assistant Director of the Entrepreneurs in Science (EIS) Unit at UNSW where he was involved in the development and teaching of the Diploma and Graduate Certificate programs.

Laurence continues to support the EIS Unit and is a strong believer of its objectives. He remains adamant that technology commercialisation education is essential to equip future scientists with the skills necessary to ensure a successful future for the Australian economy.

Maurice Chiarella (UNSW Visiting Fellow, B.Bus) has been the Financial Accountant for Stannard Marine Pty Ltd for over ten years and is responsible for the financial management of six Australian companies. These companies cover a diverse range of businesses including managing tugboats in South Australia and Darwin, an industrial marina in Sydney and recreational marina in Tasmania, a hotel in Tasmania as well as investment and property portfolios. In his capacity as Financial Accountant, Maurice reports directly to the Company Directors and manages all financial aspects including preparation and analysis of financial statements, payroll, debtors, creditors, budgeting and forecasting.

Maurice believes having an understanding of business and accounting concepts is now a pre-requisite for any student hoping to successfully enter the commercial world. The Diploma in Innovation Management confronts these issues and plays a valuable role in educating and preparing the future scientist for a career beyond university.

 

Hamish Hawthorn (UNSW Visiting Fellow, BE Syd, MBT UNSW) is the Chief Executive Officer of ATP Innovations – Australia’s premier technology business incubator. ATP Innovations delivers commercialisation and business expertise to emerging technology businesses, helping entrepreneurs build successful high-growth companies.

Hamish has been involved in the commercialisation of technology for over 15 years with experience in the advanced manufacturing and life science sectors. Prior to joining ATP Innovations, Hamish directed strategic business development programs for a number of emerging Australian technology companies. He also has worked in economic and industry development for the Federal and New South Wales Governments, focusing on the technology sector, particularly in the life-sciences. He has been involved with innovation, product development and R&D throughout his career and focuses now on early-stage commercialisation and entrepreneurship.

Hamish sits on the boards of two Australian biotechnology companies and is the past Chair of the NSW Branch of Ausbiotech. In additional to the Entrepreneurs in Science, Hamish teaches entrepreneurship at the University of Sydney, the University of Technology, Sydney and the Australian National University. He is a qualified mechanical engineer with postgraduate training in business and technology.

Hamish is committed to the Diploma in Innovation Management because it provides students with an understanding of the commercialisation process and the business of science early in their careers – equipping them with the tools to shape their future in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Mike Hirshorn OAM (UNSW Visiting Fellow, MBA MBBS FFin) is the Director of Kestrel Capital Pty Ltd and manages one of Australia’s significant early stage venture capital funds, Nanyang Innovation Fund. In this role he has been responsible for making investments and acquisitions, resulting in a return for major investing institutions. Currently, Kestrel Capital has approximately $200m under management.

Mike has undertaken significant achievements in developing and managing one of Australia’s most successful medical technology companies - Cochlear Limited. He has significant international management expertise in all areas of company operations, including manufacturing, research and development, intellectual property, worldwide marketing and sales, regulatory affairs, government relations and business development. In addition, he has had extensive experience in developing strategic alliances with major multinationals. In 1988 he won the BRW Businessman of the Year (Technology) for establishing Cochlear in the USA and Europe and was also a Director of Resmed which is now listed on the NYSE and ASX. Mike is currently a Director of one ASX listed company and three early stage private companies in a variety of industries with a number of technologies. In 2004 he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his work in commercialising medical technology.

Mike helps deliver the Diploma in Innovation Management because he believes it plays an important role in educating our future scientist in commercialisation. He believes its content is both valuable and relevant to today's world of science.

Tony Gellert (B.Sc (Hons), MBT UNSW) is a member of the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) private client services advisory team and specialises in assisting companies to commercialise their technology and manage rapid growth. Tony has expertise in strategy and business planning/investment presentations, and commercial due diligence for technology and start up/high growth companies.  Tony has 10 years industry experience in science commercialisation having worked with private businesses and listed Biotechs at different stages of their life cycle from early stage to mature stage.

He brings to the PwC team valuable experience and an understanding of the complex management issues these companies face at varying time points in their growth. He has extensive experience in the life sciences, building services and manufacturing sectors. Tony has a research and commercialisation background which is invaluable for understanding the nature and underlying motives of the inventor/founder.  Tony has an Honours Degree in Biotechnology and an Masters in Business Technology from the University of NSW.
