As we head into the second half of the current decade, Australia is aligning itself to compete in the global high technology market place. High technology products impact on all levels of daily life and manufacture and there are few if any products or services that are not being influenced or modified by the high technology revolution. High technology developments lead to new business opportunities and the ultimate and rapid extinction of previous technologies and their associated businesses.
|
Thus high technology is both a perpetual opportunity and a perpetual threat and the only way to survive in business tomorrow is to innovate today. Australia does not have an adequately developed innovative and entrepreneurial high technology culture. We may be good scientists but we have not seized the commercial opportunities arising from our inventions and discoveries. Our ideas are often commercially exploited overseas with the Australian community left to import or license the resulting products without any financial return.
Nations and cultures that nurture and encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in their society and back this up with a solid education system will be the real financial winners in the new economy. It has been well documented that high investment in Science and Technology R&D by public and private sectors correlates with strong economic growth. Innovation is now recognised by all major political parties as being essential to the future strength of Australia's economy. The Australian public is demanding Government policies that will lead to profits from Australian know-how remaining in Australia. All sectors of the Australian community believe that we must generate an entrepreneurial and innovative high technology culture to remain competitive in the global economy.
Our unit offers the opportunity for science students at UNSW to learn and more importantly put into practice the professional skills that will be required of our future scientists as Australia strives to compete on the world stage. This is being achieved at the undergraduate level, through the Diploma in Innovation Management, the first undergraduate program of its kind to be established, with graduates of our program being highly sought after both in industry and in academia.
I encourage you, through this web site, to explore the range of activities offered by the Entrepreneurs in Science Unit. Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
